My parnter has 09 1.4 Tsi mk 6 golf
The boot stopped opening by all means
so i removed the trim and opened it from inside.
I have checked the wires in the rubber between the boot and the body and all is ok there.
I checked there was a 12v signal going to the latch and this is what i found
Ignition off i am getting a 12v signal while the latch was not being touched or moved but when you try to open the boot with the latch the signal drops and you have no 12v until you release the latch so you cant open the boot
It seems that the 12v signal is reversed (polarity is reversed) am i right with thinking this and if so what could be the problem.
Please help as she is a cleaner and needs to get in the boot 3 or 4 times aday and is now nagging me to death about this

I think I recall the same on our Touran: the boot release switch drops from 12V to zero when you press it. That drop is the signal that the locking control uses to send a signal back to release the actual latch.

Assuming the rest of the behaviour is the same...

    1. Do you hear a noise when you press the release button, and when the central locking is engaged does that noise not happen (both of which would be signs of proper behaviour)?
    2. If you manually release the boot then while it is open (ie, up in the air) you should be able to use the shaft of a screwdriver (or a robust pen, the neck of a dining fork, etc) to do the same job as the hoop / staple that the latch locks into. Push the moving part of the latch back until it clicks, as if the boot was closed. Does the boot switch now work to release it?

If you hear things and it can release when "loosely locked" it may be a misalignment or friction / tightness that can be sorted by loosening the staple and letting it ease into a different position, or greasing the lock / staple. If there is no noise and / or it doesn't release even like this the latch or its wiring is probably damaged.

When our Touran latch had the opposite problem (wouldn't hold closed after trying to whack boot shut to squeeze a load in) I was pleasantly surprised that a replacement was in stock and only ~£40 (or whatever seemed pleasing at the time) at local VAG dealer on a Saturday morning .
