I've recently experienced an occasional misfire on cruise and when on the over run. It doesn't happen under load or while accelerating, but is none the less very annoying. It seems to be worse when everything's up to heat, or after doing around 50 miles. The car has done a total of 63,000 miles and doesn't use oil or coolant and seems to otherwise run well.

Type 5N Engine no: CFFB498023 103 kW. No modifications.

Any ideas of where to start to look would be much appreciated!

I see someone else has a very similar problem but no one has responded in 9 months......

    Tiguan misfire – 22-03-2019,08:48 PM
    Hi after some advice please.
recently bought a 2.0 Tdi Tiguan.
it runs fine apart from a slight misfire/judder when car is cruising between 50-70 mph when your foots only just resting on pedal.
got no issues at all during acceleration it’s just on motorway I get this misfire every few mins.
car is a 62 plate with 58000 miles, full vw history etc.
i have a 3 month warranty on car but just wanted some info before I take it in.
    thanks

You really need a code read with VCDS to see if the engine is throwing anything up.

Common problems are the EGR valve getting sooted up & sticking.
Also the throttle valve getting coked up with carbon causing malfunction.

Has the car had the emissions update ?

Thanks for the reply and useful input. Since I have two Tiguans and an older Audi I was considering a purchase of an ICarSoft scan tool. I use these things for my old Porsche and Mercedes and find them invaluable, but don't have a laptop so wouldn't benefit from the Vag-Com cable. Is VCDS likely to give more relevant info than an ICarSoft tool?
There are no MIL indications on the dash as yet but I am leaning towards fuelling issues or fuel rail pressure, as the throttle response seems a little dead compared to my wife's newer model of Tiguan. This 2012 car is a recent purchase from an independent dealer so I'm unsure whether its had an emissions update. Hopefully not, as i understand its a retrograde update for the driving experience! It is however going back to the dealer this Friday for his mechanic to have a look, so hopefully he will sort this out. I will reply after Friday if it's sorted with the answer, otherwise I'll see if cleaning the EGR valve helps.

It seems to be a job to beat VCDS, except for VW's own system.

    I've never used
    ICarSoft so can't comment.

There is also OBD11 & Carista which are both fairly cheap, again I have not used these myself but they seem to get good reports.

I think if you go onto VW's web site with your Reg & Vin you can check if the vehicle has had the emissions update.

Hope the dealer sorts out your problems Friday.

OK. Surprisingly the Icarsoft scanner arrived the day after I ordered it so did a quick scan. Only one fault code which seems to link to the issue: "Fuel rail /System pressure - too low" So, unless the fuel filter is heavily blocked/contaminated I can see a more expensive repair in the offing. I would also have expected hesitation on acceleration had the filter been blocked, but this isn't the case.
