    Hi Guys,

there are a few threads here and elsewhere about the different MMI units but they seem to be conflicting. I am hoping to retrofit a reverse camera to my 2013 C7 A6 Avant (the damn thing is really long and the wife won't drive it as she can't park it).

I started off by reading this blog:A6 C7 4G Reverse Camera Retrofit - Audi A6 Retrofit Blog

Found a cheap 4H0 907 441 and ordered a Kufatec cable. Before I got any further I read a post where someone said it won't work on a MMI RMC unit.
At that stage I was not even aware of all the different MMI units, and even now I am slightly confused due to conflicting info on the net. So I am at the mercy of you experienced folks before I start dismantling the car for no gain.

I am fairly sure my unit is a RMC as it says so in the settings. So for now I have the following questions and will post full step by step photo walk through of this if I can get it working (yes there are others including the post I linked to but I can't even see from there where the reverse cam module goes! Somewhere in the boot... I'll make sure to post detailed steps with photos.

    - Has anybody ever done a reverse cam retrofit on a RMC? Is it possible?
    - Do I understand correctly that there are the following MMI units for a C7?:

    • RMC
    • 3G (different to RMC although some posts suggest this is the same as RMC)
    • 3G plus (this has the non number dedicated touch panel next to the gear lever, but on auction sites seem to just have MMI3G printed on the headunit)
    • MIB2

    - If the RMC won't take the reverse cam can I
    • upgrade to the 3G by just changing the head unit and keeping the same display?
    • to upgrade to 3G plus do I just change the console with touchpad by the gear lever and the headunit, seems like I might need a different screen although they seem to be the same size mostly on some auction sites
    • upgrade a 2013 model with a MIB2 unit which by the sounds of it is a step up with Carplay etc... been quoted £1400 for the lot including new instrument cluster etc.. just not sure it is worth it? Any advice here appreciated!

Sorry for all the questions but I've not found clear answers in the other threads, if anything I have found conflicting answers...

    Many thanks

RMC to 3G is a very costly retrofit. Nonetheless, I've got RMC and the rear camera (factory fit) so do let me know if you need any info...

    Hi @Johnny31

Many thanks for getting back to me, good to hear you have the RMC with rear camera, I might give it a go then. On the retrofit site I listed the author mentioned the factory camera being inferior to cheap Chinese alternatives. Do you find yours a problem? Potentially the last piece of the puzzle for me although I think I might need a bracket to hold the reverse module 4F0907297.

Why do you say it is an expensive retrofit to the 3G? My (potential mis-) understanding is that for one you can use the free map updates with the 3G. I take it is not just a straight head unit swop then? I get that the 3+ needs the console and maybe monitor changing and the MIB a whole host of stuff including the instrument cluster but thought the 3G was just an easy swop.... guess they don't make anything easy

    Cheers

The resolution of the rear camera is a joke. Nonetheless, both me and my better half find it really useful. I do not need nice "snaps" but the useful extra info that it provides.
Re: retrofit, few years ago I spec'd the parts to replace my RMC and it was £££ (screen, the unit itself, the amplifier, touch pad, all the harnesses, etc, etc)
It can be done (and several people here did it) but in my books, not worth the effort and the money. Easier to "upgrade" using the kit from Alibaba or similar that gives you android auto / car play and the extra things such as camera input.

I agree I did MMI 3G to 3gP and it cost a lot

With rmc it’s all in the dash with MMI THE tuner is in the boot so all the wires to add and FOC I didn’t do it

The camera is good Quality when connected to an
MMI screen because the resolution is greater the RMC is a smaller screen with less resolution But nonetheless still good to have
