    Hi Guys,

I have a 2012 Audi A8 D4 3.0 Quattro TDI which has currently 79K miles on it. This I bought about six months ago and with a full service history came peace of mind. So far so good, no issues at all (apart from niggly start/stop giving issues).
However, although it says/is ticked off for transmission fluid and Haldex service, I don't believe a word of it. It also said the filters were changed and they were in a disgraceful state. They so were not changed.
Anyhow's, I'm looking to do a transmission and Haldex/Torsen service and I'm really confused as to what is has. According to the data sticker I have a CDTA engine, that much is clear. This is followed by letters KCC (differential type?) and MXU (transmission type?) followed LX7W/LX7W (paint code I think and finally N5D/FZ (possibly interior equipment).

I have read that if your engine is transverse then its a Haldex differential, longways its a Torsen, but even the workshop manual doesn't specify and show one with filters and two types of oil! Very confusing.

The gearbox I am worried about as again I am unsure. Its a definite 8 speed ZF HP8 but doesn't anyone know the best transmission fluid to use? Dread the thoughts of using the wrong one!

I read quite a bit up on this site and there is some brilliant stuff on it, but to be honest I'm as confused now as I was. I am living in Northern Ireland and parts are generally 2 days away so if I end up with the wrong stuff that's me goosed as well as I cant be off the road for more than a day.

Once I've got everything I will document everything and put it up on website. You never know, someone may have the same issue as me LOL.

    Any help would be great.

    Karl

It doesn't have a haldex and the automatic fluid is only checked/topped up.
The correct fluid for the ZF HP8 is green ZF Lifeguard 8 - many companies do an equivalent these days, such as MANNOL and Ravenol.
(It is not the specialist stuff it was 10 years ago).
There is then the front rear and centre diff oils. The best thing to do is get the part numbers based on your PR codes from:
Audi A8/S8 quattro (A8Q) 2011 year Group Parts Audi EUROPA
    and cross reference.
Yes youa re right about the paint code.

    Hey,
many thanks for the quick response. Delighted you could confirm the correct fluid type, ill be out to buy that over the weekend. I know you said that it doesnt require changing, but I read somewhere that ZF stipulate every 60K miles and Audi says it life time fluid (which is warranty lifetime apparently lol). Ill change it for peace of mind. Scarily though I thought there was only the rear differential to do. Ill be checking into that pronto.
Have you any idea what the KCC denotes?
    Regards
    Karl

Update - I have checked the PR codes with the link you sent me - very good indeed. Pretty much have everything I need now, G060162A2 fluid for gearbox plus a couple of other fluids for final drive and read diff (G052145S2). However, final drive rear box fluid G055145A2 is about £100.00 a ltr!!! Is that normal? I know Audi is known for turning the screw but blimey!

I have seen the G055145A2 oil as low as £37 online, I can't remember where, maybe ebay, but it is generally believed to be the same as the front and rear diffs with 3-5% sturaco LS additive. You can buy this additve on ebay and add it or you could buy top quality limited slip-compatible oil which is said to be the same thing. I just used TITAN SINTOPOID LS SAE 75W-90. as it is a third party product and not recommended by Audi, you would have to independently research.

Many thanks snapdrgon, I will look into it. Local motor factors is pretty good and should be able to help as well.
Carried out a service there today with new front pads fitted as well. Have to say, love the twin pot calipers, such an even pressure spread on the pad. Its wear was the most uniform (on the disc I mean) that I have seen.
Worrying I scanned car using VCDS and this fault has emerged.

    1 Fault Found:
    8169 - Terminal 30
    U140A 00 [047] - Open Circuit
Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
    Freeze Frame:
    Fault Status: 00000001
    Fault Priority: 2
    Fault Frequency: 19
    Mileage: 110885 km
    Date: 2000.00.00
    Time: 00:00:00

After reading a good bit about it, it would seam to be the culprit for the intermittent stop start issue I have. And it looks like it has something to do with the ECM relay. trouble is, I cant find where the bloody thing is. There is lots of info on the A6 location (relay 645). If I can find it I can test. Any Ideas?

I used to get my gearbox fluid changed PDQ each time I bought an A8.
Even if the gears were smooth.
used to be around £4/500+....... (VAG Indy mostly, occasionally Audi dealer)
Howver, seeing as I kept changing the A8s, I stopped doing it.

Most of the time, it made no difference to change smoothness.

I am not brave enough to do it myself, as I don’t have the space nor lifting gear.
