Anyone out there tried out this job, without removing the entire dash, as in the attached link?

Hi, I did this not so long ago. Fairly easy to be honest. Especially as I was initially expecting to have to remove the dash! Was pleasantly surprised at how cheap the core was too!

Thanks Kyle, I'll maybe give it a go.
Out of interest, did you by any chance replace the thermostat housing in trying to improve the heater. If so, any problems, which engine do you have?

    Hi, no problem.

I did indeed change the thermostat and housing, only issue I had was I snapped the locking lug off of the temp sensor plug. Everything else was a doddle.

    I have a 2.0 BKD.

For one reason or another In total I’ve replaced:
    Radiator
    Aux heater pump
    Thermostat & Housing
    Heater Matrix Core
    Coolant Temp Sensor

Heater is bang on now, get’s red hot fairly quickly!

Biggest changes i saw were with the stat (mine stuck open slightly) and the matrix.

Radiator was replaced as I was doing the intercooler so fo £40 it made sense.

Temp sensor was changed due to throwing up a fault code, made no noticeable difference to anything.

When changing the matrix make sure you replace the “foam gasket” or you’ll lose a slight bit of airflow from the vents. The one i bought from an online European provider of parts for cars was £12 and didn’t come with the foam. I bought some self adhesive draft excluder and used that.

    Hope this helps,
    Kyle

Hi Kyle, does your BKD engine use the thermostat housing with 2 internal 'stats, pipes for 2 large hoses and 2 small hoses, and large dia. pipe for feed to water pump across back of engine, (5 outlets in all). This is what's on my 1.6fsi BLP engine. It looks very tricky to replace with all those pipe clamps, and access to the bottom 2 Torx bolts looks difficult due to my auto gearbox selector lever. Housing is fixed to vertical face of block with 4 Torx screws, and relies on one rubber seal shaped with a circular part and an oval part , both joined together.

    Hi mate,

No mine has just the one pipe coming off at 45 degree angle, pointing towards the gearbox if I remember rightly.

And the coolant temp sensor is in there too.

The bolts are a bit of a pain to get at and required a “wobble head” extension bar but not impossible.

How did you get on with the heater matrix?

Also only the one stat. Fairly old school design to be honest.
