I've just drained the oil, took the old filter out and went to fit the new one, but the filter I was supplied has a ~1 inch "rod" on the end, and the filter I removed hasn't. The YouTube videos I watched showed the same filters with no issues, but the new filter won't fit in as there's already a "rod" in the filter housing. Have I been given the wrong filter or have I done something wrong?!

Sounds like the old ‘rod’ has snapped off. I vaguely recall lubricating 2 o-rings when I changed mine so it definitely had a rod with a small seal near the bottom.

Mine always have the "rod". It doesn't fasten in the housing very tightly - I expect you'll be able to turn it easily in there if it is snapped / loose, and pull out with long nosed pliers or similar.

Just in case it's different, what engine code is on the service book or door pillar sticker? BKD, AZV, etc.

There are 2 types of filter listed for B6 Passats, one with the rod, the other without. You should be able to tell whether the rod snapped off or not, and if not you need the other filter type.

Brilliant, thanks! Euro Car Parts only lists one filter which I thought was safe to assume it would be correct!

The PD engines predominantly have the extended rod and seal. The plain filter insert is normally found on some Common Rail engines e.g. CFFB. Always make sure the right one is fitted.

As far as I can see CBAB uses filter part 071115562C, with rod. The other type 03L115562 with no rod (and hole through middle) is used on Passats after 2009. Search for them on eBay to compare.
