my recently bought 190 sounds very growly pre turbo kick in so i still suspect the turbo or the actuator, what pipes are involved that might be leaking, turbo is fine once it kicks in but its very reluctant in first making me wonder if something is amiss, im guessing the actuator is electronic now as opposed to just vacccum controlled but i just dont know as i have yet to get a workshop manual showing the layout and parts, these days its all on pdf files - can anybody point me to where ? has anybody got a 190 anywhere near burton on trent that i can compare too ?

My B8 150 Tdi was disappointingly noisy/unrefined at lowish revs - lots of diesel clatter in the cabin - substantially worse than the B7 I had before. Pleased to report that the B8.5 is a massive improvement in this respect, it is so much more refined. Maybe I just had a bad B8 (like they forgot to put some of the sound deadening in).

Im continuing this thread as either nobody has had my problem or nobody knows the answer, so i will plod on with this here as either nobody knows the answer and might be useful to some other poor sod or someone offers some insight , bearing in mind i have no experience of vw's aside from the buggered turbo on a 2006 passat i bought privately and was so annoyed i had a refurb turbo put on it and sold it immediately and the infrequent problems of the wifes passat. i have read that the passat has vvt, which may explain the growly noise i get until the turbo eventually spools up, as im thinking its advancing the valves in expectation of a turbo which is late to the party, again while the 2006 turbo was overboosting and going into limp mode @ 80mph i got the same growly noise until the turbo woke up and then of course over-boosted. So while not the same problem this time. the growly noise from the engine until the turbo wakes up is the same. Of course this is conjecture based on 3x 2.0 tdi's.
