That is a very rare option, vacuum operated. I will have a look at the diagrams at work but the most common reason on this system was a vacuum leak, usually at the pedal valves. If you disconnect the vacuum line from the pump and apply a vacuum to the system, you should not be able to draw air much like when testing a TDI vacuum system.

I know absolutely nothing about these vacuum systems . What is the purpose of the vacuum system and what is it used to control . Where is it normally pressured from ? (Or depressured if it’s a vacuum) what can you use to test them ?
    Cheers

Could I have the VIN? It is actually extremely simple and easy to follow. The actuator which holds the throttle open is operated by a vacuum pump and the vacuum regulated by a control box with speed and switch inputs, the system is also quickly shut down by the vents in the pedal switches releasing the vacuum. I have seen very few of these over the years and even the 95 S2 I have in doesn’t have it, it was an option. We have a customer with a very early A3 1.6 and with cable throttle and cruise but these are bizarre. They use a motor in the throttle like cars only a year later use for all throttle control. Her TB is faulty and obsolete from Audi but we have managed to find one at VDO in Germany but for daft money and it is on its way.

Thanks Crasher that's really helpful info . I will try and identify the parts under the bonnet tomorrow.

The Vin number is WAUZZZ 8G z XK000889 8G7 0M8 (that's off the sticker in the boot)

    Checking cruise control vacuum system
‒ Pull off vacuum hose at vacuum pump.
‒ Press in diaphragm at actuator.
    ‒ Seal hose pulled off.
‒ There are no leaks in vacuum system if diaphragm at actuator remains pressed in and does not move.
‒ Vacuum system is leaking if diaphragm returns to original position.

    Possible causes of trouble
◆ Vent valve leaking or incorrectly set
    ◆ Actuator leaking
    ◆ Cracks in vacuum hoses

This is the type 8D 1993 wiring diagram (I dug out the book of words because of having the S2 in so I scanned it for you) but I think it will be the same, yes the auto lacks the Y piece and clutch valve. First job for me would be checking fuse 12.
