    Yes it seems so, the motor makes a noise but nothing happens

    hmmm, maybe a gearing issue.

    Mine's a detachable factory kit dealer fit.
    2013 B7 Passat BlueMotion Sport Estate 2.0 TDi 177PS (CFGC), 6 speed Manual, Metallic Night Blue, Fontana alloys, Start/Stop, RNS-510 (HW H09, SW 5238 V13 maps, 8316) Nav DAB, ACC, XDS, TPM, Westfalia Tow bar, Rear View camera, Keyless Entry, Easy Open/close Electric Tailgate, Park Assist, Electric Parking Brake, DRL's, Amb light, Zebrano wood, Tinted Glass, mud flaps, 61K. Cheat emission software. Nextbase 402G iN-CAR CAM.

    i dont know, i have no idea how it works - as i say, didnt know i had one till this afternoon but i know i hear a motor but nothing happens

    The video that UMEL posted shows how it is supposed to work. The whirring you hear is just the electric release which should then let gravity take its course. I've had factory fitted towbars on a B7 and a B8 and in both cases if you don't use it for some time it doesn't drop down - pull the switch and reach up & grab the tow bar at the same time and you can pull it down.

    That's wonderful thank you, I was hoping it might be lack of use rather than something expensive, I'm rather thinking its never been used.
