    Hi all,

I have tried to search but can’t seem to come up with the answer so thought I’d post my first question..... hope not one of many!

I work away and this involves me leaving the car by the sea for 2 weeks at a time all year round, I only picked the car up the day before I left and assumed the rear parking brake would have a similar operating procedure to my previous car....

As in once I go into ‘park’ and don’t apply the handbrake, shut the car off and it doesn’t automatically apply.
I’ve notice my A6 BiTdi automatically engages whether I ask it to or not.
I didn’t have any time to mess around trying as I was running late so now have a handbrake in for a fortnight when I’d prefer not to.

Is there a way to just leave the car in park with no ha Dvorak’s applies to prevent it seizing/sticking when I’m working away?

    Thanks for any help.

    George.

You really shouldn’t leave it in park only as there’s only a pin in the gearbox that holds the car so if someone bumps you it can break the gearbox. A set of discs and pads is Way cheaper than a gearbox.
Anyway the only way I can remember doing it was to hold the foot brake and manually release handbrake. You need to turn off auto handbrake/hill hold as well otherwise when you switch off engine the handbrake will normally apply.

Thanks for the reply, the car isn’t parked on the road it’s in a friends drive so little chance of a bump. (I’ve probably jinxed that now).
However I’m sure the auto hold was engaged so that could explain why.

Thanks for the quick answer and your help.

Use a brick or bit of wood to hold car so the weight of the car isn’t on the gearbox.

Didn’t think of that so that’s an option in future.

    Thanks.

Hi all finally got round to trying this,

When I disable the auto hold and put the gear lever into park.
Once the engine is switched off the handbrake automatically applies still.

Is there another way round this at all so I can switch the car off with it de-activated?

Just I can be away from the car for up to 3 weeks at a time and don’t like the idea of coming back to brakes stuck every month.

    Thanks.
