    Good Morning
    I have a 1.9 TDI 90bhp 2000 Golf.
Last week the alternator workshop message came on along with the battery light on my way home from work. I checked the voltage and it was less than 12 volts with the Engine running. I ordered a new Bosch regulator. Whilst fitting I checked the earth points for alternator and battery, and all seemed fine.
Replaced the regulator and the alternator put out 14.4 volts with engine running.
On my way to work this morning, same message again, alternator workshop with the battery light on. Connected my OBD 2 reader and the voltage was reading 11.8v. Made it to work and restarted the engine. Reading 13.8 volts which must mean battery charging (again thought the OBD2 port)?
Could the alternator be damaging the regulator? The copper wheel/bushes looked in OK nick when changing the regulator. Any other areas I should be looking at?
    Thanks

I gave up fitting new regulators about 40 years ago, unless the armature is re-cut flat, the new brushes skid and don’t make proper contact.

If the armature surface is in good condition ( ie no gauges) then its worth while to fit new regulator. I've done this a few times and saved myself a fortune. If you have a friend with a a reasonably accurate lathe it's a simple matter to take a light skim off the copper armature surface.

I did it a few times on customers cars many decades ago, had them come back and the job make me look bad so decided never again. DIY it could save you a few £’s but for how many hours labour with an uncertain result?

I don't think approx. £200 each time was only few pounds ( not to me anyway !) . It only took half an hour to remove the regulator and it was easy to see that the brushes were well worn and needed renewing . A quick look at the armature surface with a magnifier mirror revealed the surface was ok but I was quite prepared to M/C it if necessary on my old lathe.
