    Good evening,

My (elderly) parents have my old 2006 Audi A3 Sportback and have an issue with battery drain of 1 amp / per hour. There are intermittent issues with instrument cluster not working, wipers not working etc. Has had 3 new batteries within the last couple of weeks. First died within a day with a bad cell and then two more from RAC after that. When fuse F6 is removed, the 1 amp / per hour drain stops. Fuse has been cleaned with emery cloth and when fuse added, the drain was much lower then goes back to 1 amp / per hour. I'm about 200 miles away from them so can't really help apart from googling and talking over the phone. Logic is now pointing towards the instrument module or cluster being faulty; I initially thought it was the convenience module in boot.

Firstly, does anyone have any suggestions on anything else to test or secondly, is there anyone near Stourbridge that has VCDS that might be able to help out for some beer tokens? They are getting stressed with it and threatening to scrap the car - it has only done 70K miles and has been fault free right up to this point.

Any help or advice will gratefully be received by both myself and my parents!

    Many thanks in advance.

    James

So fuse F6 controls the instrument cluster and module,,, anything else? Can you unplug the individual items on the circuit to see which ones stops draining?

I will see if I can get him to remove the cluster tomorrow and unplug it and see what happens. Could a faulty cluster cause a drain on the battery?

It's quite difficult trying to communicate these things over the phone with them lol.

Try checking the alternator too. Poor earth or fault could cause a draw. Also, might be a broken wire in the door which prevents the car going into sleep mode (bit of a guess)

A bit of an update - car has been scanned and had to have a second scan due to the fuses being removed / replaced etc.

Quite a few errors have been thrown up and think that instrument cluster might be main culprit but I'm not totally sure. Would anyone be able to comment on the log provided here?

Somebody with better knowledge of VCDS might give you an answer here but the Ross Tech forums is a good place for help and information on the VCDS

    Hi
My Wife had an issue with a MK5 GOLF that due to a flat battery fried something in the instrument cluster due to voltage spike, we had all manner of faults and non start, I narrowed it down to the instrument cluster. I removed it and sent it away to this company below in the link. They tested and repaired the instrument cluster with a guarantee , I refitted and all good. It was much cheaper than a new part from VW that would also need coding as blank and could only be done at a dealer due to immobiliser / security. I have no connection with the company, part from being a happy customer.

    Good luck.

    Jason
