I have done a web/forum search but I can't find any info on this specific to the A6. Over recent weeks I have received an increasing number of warning messages about thieves accessing keyless cards near to doors/windows and using that access to open and steal cars. Some even suggest getting a RFID-proof key box to store keys in. I have the "normal" A6 key fob with buttons to open/lock doors and the boot. I do not have true "keyless" access but the car does know when the keys are in the car and uses this to allow starting of the car - which must be via a wireless connection. My question is "Is the normal A6 fob vulnerable to scanning fraud?". Realise it may be a simple nswer, but would appreciate some guidance

    Manty thanks

    Michael.

The key scanning is a true security risk, but the regular key is not affected with this fraud. The reason is simple, the thiefs will not be able to OPEN your car, so it doesn't matter if they can start the engine or not.

Hi yes as said not an issue for the normal fob Reason being that it only transmits a signal when you press a button, the keyless ones are transmitting all the time, that's how the car recognises you are there when you go to open it. For anyone with keyless get a Faraday bag off the Internet and keep the fobs in it when not using them, the radio signal cannot pass through the bag so nothing for a scanner to pick up.

You can also use a tin foil lined pot to put your keys in. Have to say this whole issue with keyless is a real concern, because Audi have lumped in advanced key into most of the 'packages' when ordering a new car. i.e. if you want B&O sound or ambient lighting you have to have advanced key. It's madness. Also merc and bmw have introduced keyless where the key goes to sleep if the key isn't moved for 30 seconds. Not heard if Audi will. In all honesty, with the crime rate we have now, if the thieves really want your car and can't scan the key using a relay, they will probably break in to your home to steal the keys anyway. There seems to be no deterent at the moment (if caught soft sentences etc.)
