Axle stand placement

This weekend I'm changing the oil on my 2010 Passat 2.0 diesel estate. I've searched various forums but am yet to find a definitive answer - where is a suitable placement for axle stands?

I would usually get some ramps but I need to get the wheels off the ground as I believe one of the front bearings needs replacing (I get a recurring vibrating-type sound at 50mph that happens every second or so plus vibration in the pedals - does this sound like a bearing?) so I need to give the wheels a wiggle to test for any movement. If it's not a bearing, what else could it be?

I jack up from the pinch weld (normal jacking point marked with a triangular indentation on the sill) then put the axle stands under the subframe. I usually use the small double bolts that hold the console bush to the subframe as my particular axle stands fit nicely in the recess. When lowered the two bolts rest fully on the axle stand and it simply can't move.

A vibration in the wheel could be a number of things and at 50mph it is often an out of balance wheel which happens when some or all of the balance weights fall off. I would be very sure of what it is before ordering parts. A bearing gone usually makes a humming noise getting louder as the wear increases. There would be noticeable play when the wheel is off the ground and rocked by hand holding a 3 to 9 o'clock position and also 6 and 12 o'clock position.

My Passat has always seemed a bit loud buts it's only done 82k so the bearings should have a lot more life in them. I recently had 4 new tyres fitted so you could be right re the weights. I'll have a look in the morning and stop by the tyre shop at the weekend ��
