Hi, I’ve been weighing up a few Audis for my 100 mile round trip to work. It’s mainly motorway, so I’m after something that’ll ideally give me 50mpg+.

The priority is reliability, I suppose, and Audis in general seem to get poor reviews in terms of reliability from some of the major websites. I’m hoping it’s engines like the TFSI that bring the average score down, and not the fact that there are issues across the whole range of diesels.

In short, I basically want to know if the 2.0TDi is still a safe bet in the newer Audis, or if there is a standout engine for reliability and I’ll go from there in terms of car choice. I’m looking to spend £7-£10k.

Any help would be much appreciated.

hi i have recently purchased an audi a4 2.0tdi 177ps quattro avant with the later common rail engine had it about six weeks now . two observations not very good MPG for a diesel and it takes an age to warm up and that is with a brand new genuine audi thermostat recently fitted . once it does get up to temp it can not hold it if you slow down or are in traffic the temp drops if you have the heater on it really struggles to get to temp and drops like a stone if you slow down . i think half the problem with poor MPG is the engine runs cool . god knows what it is going to be like when the weather turns really cold but i am not looking forward to it

Cheers sbt, maybe that’s a good engine for me to avoid then. I hope it doesn’t give you too much hassle, mate.

Those are classic signs of a DSG thermostat that is stuck open.

If your car has the DSG gearbox get it checked out.

If manual you will have to look elsewhere as that isn't normal behaviour.
