Have just had the old girl MOT'd (AWX 2002) and it failed on the brakes and the following: exhaust emissions exceed level of metered smoke for a turbo charged engine, and Exhaust emissions exceed manufacturers specified limit. Only thing is the car is running perfectly and with around 54mpg on a long run which is the best its ever been since I did the cam belt recently. Plugged it into VCDS and all it comes up with is 00467 control module for fuel pump - no comms. I thought it might have failed the emissions test due to something like a poor MAP sensor as this was the case with the car 2 years ago and I swapped it out for a good one, but as VCDS is not flagging this up I am completely at a loss. Can anyone help?.

Worked it out for myself this time. After changing the air filter, I took the car for a run on a short hard gradient just before the re-MOT and found that it went into limp mode so thought I'd change the MAP sensor as had one lying about. This did the trick as it ran fine on the same gradient. Moral of the story is if VCDS doesn't show anything don't assume the sensors (MAP in this case) are good.
