Recently I noticed that there was a squeak coming from the viscous fan bracket (059 121 313 F / 059121313F). Having removed the bracket, it was obvious that the bearing that is pressed into it is now no good. I did some research and I can't find anything at all that offers any help other than buying another bracket at great cost.

I thought I would offer my experience in the hope it will save somebody some hassle and maybe some money.

So this is the bracket, and as you can see I've got a puller on the pulley.

    IMG_6077.jpg

Now with the pulley removed below.
    IMG_6079.jpg

You can see from the image below, you can see the original bearing is on the left. The bearing is actually a FAG WS2263 which is in fact a water pump bearing, these are no longer available so what I did was to buy a new bearing from a different manufacturer however the centre shaft is I bit too long and needs reducing in length. The one in the centre it the new unmodified bearing, and the one on the right is the modified bearing and has its shaft slightly reduced in length to match the original.
    IMG_6080.jpg

    IMG_6081.jpg

Below is the length of the original bearing.
    IMG_6082.jpg

I used a 32mm long socket to aid in pressing out the bearing, see next picture
    IMG_6084.jpg

The bearing needs to be able to fit inside the socket
    IMG_6086.jpg

Below, I'm now pressing out the bearing.
    IMG_6087.jpg

So now you can see the bearing is being pressed out of the bracket and into the socket.
    IMG_6088.jpg

    Bearing now out

    IMG_6089.jpg

    IMG_6090.jpg
    IMG_6091.jpg
    IMG_6092.jpg

So now the bearing is pressed into the bracket, you now have to press the pulley onto the bearing shaft. You can't just press it on though as that would damage the new bearing, so what you have to do is support the shaft. That way all the force is only on the shaft and not the balls inside.

What I've done here is use the old bearing shaft up against the new bearing shaft. I turned this over to press the pulley on.
    IMG_6094.jpg

You can see the pulley being pressed on, and you might be able to just make out the old bearing underneath supporting the new one.

I hope this may be of use to somebody one day.

Neat But couldn't you just have left the shaft a bit longer? Or would that interfere with something?

I had to shorten the shaft otherwise the auxiliary belt would hang off the pulley by about 3mm, I know, I tried it without shortening and wasted a bearing. Definitely needs shortening.

I was thinking you could have left the shaft protruding 3mm, or whatever the measurement is, beyond the pulley face.

I know its old but 059 121 313 F isn't the part number, it is another example of VAG's highly annoying casting number system which look like part numbers. The actual spare part number is 059 122 303 which retails at £303.90 inc VAT, daft for a worn bearing.

Just looking into this for my fathers car, this and the bloody alternator tensioner pivot pins/bushes, utterly stupid design that I had to take the whole bracket off to release the bolt for the pin!! (typical VAG!).

Anyway, that aside, thanks for your excellent information and photos Seanious

There is no hole for the shaft to poke through the pulley.[edit] Correction, there is a hole, but it's smaller than the shaft.

Now I've just got to see if I can find something to pull off the flange (none of our workshop pullers fit), or a big enough collar to push out the bearing with the flange, none of the ones I found in the box of bits were big enough!

    Are you anywhere near Lincoln?

I used a press to get it out. The silver/blue collar is pretty hard to remove. If you are near me, I'll push it out for you.
