Last week I acquired a November 2016 Polo Blue Gt. One owner, 22000 miles and in apparently good order. Bought from Main Dealer as VW approved. Drives very well, but I’ve noticed a faint whirring noise when the car is stationary and idling in neutral. The noise stops when the clutch is depressed, so I guess it must be coming from the gearbox. Before I take it back to the dealer, does anyone know if this is “normal”. I’m worried that it may be a bearing problem, but I’d appreciate comments from anyone with a similar model.

    TIA

    Mike

    Update:

This has turned into something of a saga. I went back to the VW main dealer, and two technicians looked at the car. They concluded that there was a bearing problem, and the car was booked in to have the gearbox removed for examination. Come the day, at the instigation of the service manager, a third technician listened to the noise, and also confirmed a bearing problem. Three days later I had a call to say that they had not removed the gearbox because they now believed that the noise was normal for the car, and that the garage would obtain a similar model from another branch for comparison. In the meantime the car was returned to me. A week later I was asked to return for the comparison. This time the Master Technician was on hand, and together we listened to the two cars. To start with the comparison car, which had been standing overnight in sub-zero temperature, was noticeably quieter. However, once warmed up the gearbox noises were broadly similar, and my car was only slightly louder. The Master Technician told me that the noise was a characteristic of the heavy duty MQ350 gearbox fitted to the car, and nothing to worry about. He said he was confident it would not get any worse, and that even if they replaced the gearbox bearings it would not improve. He apologised for any alarm caused by the three lesser technicians who had diagnosed a bearing problem. He also said that he had checked the gearbox oil, and it was not contaminated and was at the correct level.

So I can only see what happens over the next few months. Since the problem has been logged at the dealer, The warranty will apparently still apply if the noise gets worse. I am tempted to try changing the gearbox oil for something thicker like Redline MTL, but reluctant to do this while the car remains in warranty.

i would be very interested to hear from any other Blue GT owners on the forum who have noticed the noise I am referring to.
