I have the BRE engine, manufactured 06/08

Is that late enough to have had the oil pump problem fixed? If not, what do I need to do to avoid serious problems?

Also, the service interval is saying 4900 miles until service required, but I've done 12,000 miles since owning the car, it was serviced just before I purchased it.
Can I wait a while or is it better to get one done soon? I'm guessing the Long Life service interval is around 20k?

Where do I need to check for water? It looks ok inside the area where the Navigation DVD is, I've removed one of the rubber grommets from the tailgate and no water came out.

Toothed belt was changed at 75k, I'm at 105k currently. What's the interval for that?

I've spotted a small amount of oil around the intake side of the engine, can supply better info on this as only had a brief look around yesterday.

Is it worth getting it serviced at Audi or is an independent OK?

Yes gear driven balancer shaft oil pump drive BRE does need sorting out .

    Kit 9

Oil Pumps from KMB Parts Direct specialist Oil pump replacement parts, Audi 2.0tdi, VW 2.0tdi, engines, support, help, advice, Sheffield, UK, England.

It's on silly LongLife setting , service now but keep with the LongLife oil and change setting .

Bear in mind sump needs dropping to fit the remanufactured modified balancer shaft & longer 100mm key kit .

Its an easy job I did mine with a VAG original part from Ebay - only cost about £12, drop the sump, remove the circlip and extract the old shaft, then slide the new one in and refit. the shaft looks like a long straight allen Key. I did mine at 150K miles and it was starting to "round off"

Good grief , that's no fix and you're still at risk as it's primarily a balancer shaft keyway issue .

You do but you also need the longer 100mm drive key with a remanufactured modified balancer shaft to accept it .

    Gives up to 40mm contact length , 77mm has 15mm .

Perfectly centered , 10x harder chrome vanadium hexagonal bore insert . Stock is a bore with just 6 tiny machined grooves to accept the very tips of the hex key .

Stock is an engineering abomination that can only be concluded as planned obsolescence .

I'm gonna go all out and replace the pump kit like Gaz suggests.

Does anyone know if the Navigation DVDs I see on ebay are any good? I don't want to brick the unit.

I have encountered some problems in trying to get the oil pump sorted.

The guy at KMB Parts is very helpful and says get it done asap. Which is sensible advice.

I spoke to someone at the local Audi place, and he informed me that some of these engines already have a modified oil pump which uses a chain. He said it was risky buying the part as they wouldn't know if it would take the Kit #9 part until they had taken the necessary bits off(he said it required removal of the sub frame), and it could transpire that I don't need the work done.

So I'm wondering now, what is the best thing to do.

Audi like most main dealers are a field of confusion .

They haven't modified anything because they didn't admit the liability of a problem .

You have BRE , the twin Lanchester balancer shaft modual is gear driven , the earlier BLB modual is chain driven .

I've been writing about this engineering planned obsolescence abomination for 9 years now .

If you doubt anything drain the oil and drop the sump and have a look .

That's what I thought. Remove sump and you'll see what type of system the oil pump is using.
Roughly how many hours would it take to have the work(oil pump driveshaft replaced with modified upgraded part from KMB) done?
    I've been quoted 6 hours at a local specialist, £360. I don't know if that's reasonable.
