Cant start the engine. SAFE on Dashboard

Hi,

I have the car for well over 8 years. Once or twice a year when I try to start the engine nothing happens and it says SAFE on the dashboard. The only solution to this is to remove the positive terminal from the battery for 30 seconds. This is what I get with VCDS immediately after the issue occurred. Any ideas on where the issue is, I think that after 8 years it is time to be fixed.

Your issue is with module 05 which is the main security module for the car, and for some reason it's gone into component protection (CP), and if that has gone into CP it will activate CP on other modules like the gateway and the instrument cluster.. That will need to be removed using a licensed version of ODIS which is the Audi dealer diagnostic tool, it will also need to have access to the Audi servers, the ebay hacked ODIS tools won't remove CP. Some 3rd party garage have ODIS but not many, also CP cannot be removed via VCDS or VCP etc.

For me it looks like that modul which is responsible for supplying information about car's VIN is faulty as all modules has active CP until they get right information i.e. until you reset that responsible module by cutting the power.

That's the 05 module. There are two modules on the A6 that cause other modules to go into CP, first is the "05-Acc/Start Auth" second is the "19-CAN Gateway" however changing the can gateway would not put the 05 module into CP.

Also look HW label, revision & serial number something has gone very wrong with this module.

Any ideas on how to fix it. I can take it to the dealership or I can take it to a shop and they can flash it to the newest version, or maybe I should replace the whole module.

Unless someone has been playing around with that module already, then it looks like its faulty and needs to be replaced. You could ask about flashing it however if there is a hardware fault which causes it to fail in the same way then your back to a dead car. Personally if it was my car I would see if you can find some local with a genuine version of ODIS and get a replacement unit, then get CP removed. If you cannot find someone local then the car will need to be recovered to your local Audi dealer and they will replace the Auth/start module and remove CP.
