I'm pretty sure it's not the lightning port on the 'phone - it's done the same thing with 2 'phones, both when they have been on charge for some time. I haven't noticed whether the 'phone is getting excessively warm.

I'll see what happens if I swap to the other USB outlet if/when it next starts to misbehave.

iOS 13.3.1 is just out and features something that may be of interest if you have been suffering from poor call quality with just CarPlay:

On a very small sample of calls the iOS update seems to have helped. The sound still isn't great - you have to speak very loudly to be heard - but thus far it hasn't been all crackle & pop.

Wired Carplay disconnection definitely seems to be related to the 'phone being fully charged. It disconnects & immediately reconnects approximately every 7-8 minutes when the battery is fully charged, but doesn't do this when it's not (or when connected wirelessly).

Both of the car's USB sockets give a wired Carplay connection.

Can you store the rear load cover under the boot floor? Does it have a designed ‘slot’ ?

Another month, another iOS update - version 13.4 which, among other things, "Resolves an issue where CarPlay may lose its connection in certain vehicles". Maybe when we are allowed to travel again I will find out whether it has fixed the repeated disconnect problem which occurs with a wired connection then the 'phone battery reaches full charge. There are also headlines all over the place that 13.4 adds the ability to use 3rd-party maps apps (e.g. Google Maps, Waze), which is a bit misleading since these have been supported for ages - the difference is that in 13.4 they are opening up the ability for 3rd-party apps to use split-screen, but developers will need to incorporate that technology into their product. I think you'd need a damned big screen for split-screen to be of much use anyway.
