OK Answering my own questions here ... Yes top mount is removed from inside the wheel arch no need to remove the lining !! All very easy !
I purchased a 'Monroe' shock from GSF ... 52 ... Quick and easy fit !! So much better driving over potholes without the additional 'lump crash' from the rear.

    Hi Keith,

Can you confirm if you had to use any special spanners for removing mount from absorber?

I want to replace mine on A4 b8+ estate.

    Thanks

The Passat type 3G and A4 type 8K are completely different cars, this is the reason I hate this B whatever designation, it leads to confusion. The A4 8K rear DAMPERS are quite easy to chnage but remember all the fastenings are one time only Torque To Yield AND you should NEVER replace dampers singularity, it is dangerous and should be banned like it is in other countries. Take care choosing your dampers as there are at least 16 variations depending on equipment and the OE make can be VAG's own, Sachs or Monroe.
