I’ve got a 2001 polo and dropped the key and lost the transponder chip. Vag com won’t program it without skc. Which I don’t have. Can anyone help. Local companies want 200 quid to sort it which just seems crazty when the car is only worth 500. It’s been in the family years and we’ve really looked after it. Would be a shame to see it go to the scrap man. Any help appreciated. Happy to pay a reasonable amount if someone can re code the key. I’ve bought a blank transponder chip but needs programming. Crewe Cheshire thanks in advance people

£200 is cheap as at a VW dealer it would cost more, the local companies you spoke to may be quoting on a cloned chip which is going to be tricky not having the original so I would check they can do this without having the original chip. The SKC code has not been available for many years and in the 18 years I have been using VCDS, I was NEVER able to get the SKC to work when it could be obtained from the VAG dealer or even the PIN code to work, what will need to be extracted is the said PIN code and this is usually done using CAN Commander but stolen fleaBay versions usually don’t work and are unsupported. As for the cost over value, we’ll I have said it until I am tired, done to death as you say, but the cost of car spares and repairs goes UP, not down, as a car ages and has absolutely nothing to do with it’s market value, run a car like that and soon it will get to the point that a tank of fuel is more than the car is worth. Alternatively you could find a used ECU with matching key and chip (don’t drop or damage the chip, some are made of ultra thin glass) and fit the ECU and chip. There will be small knock on effects from this such as needing the ECU adapting to the throttle body.

Too late for the OP, but anyone with only one key for their car should seriously consider getting another before they lose it.

I paid €100 for two new spare keys soon after I bought my Audi, much better than being stuck with a non-functioning car.

It only took the guy half an hour or so, but I don't think his equipment came cheap.

My chap says he has spent around £100k on what is in his van, so much so he feels at risk using it on the road in case of hijack as the kit would be very useful to a scum bag.

Thanks for all the input. I’ve managed to find a company who will provide a new chip for the key programmed for £85 so I can cope with that
