A3 2.0tdi 170bhp DPF issues

I now know this seems to be a common problem on the 170. Car has gone into limp mode, dpf light came on for a while and was driven as required to try and regenerate the DPF. It is a regular long distance higher speed car so should not suffer anyway.
I also scan issues with the temperature sensor bank one and it seems previous owner messed about...because the cable has no plug, just wires poked into the socket so perhaps it was a standard one with wrong plug cut off?
what should I do next, ideas please.
I can replace the sensor and clear the code although fitting the wires in tight seems to keep it clear of that code.
I cant get it out of limp mode.
if it cant get out limp mode it cant be driven to try and clear the dpf.

You should get it scanned properly and that will show up the fault codes. With VCDS you can also see the soot loading in the DPF.
