Morning all, I have had an s4 v8 avant since May this year and had no problem until now.
Yesterday I topped up the coolant from cold as I did my regular checks, it was about 2 or 3 cm low.
I drove approximately 7 miles at average pace, not hard or heavy.
I then stopped for petrol and within a minute of switching off the engine noticed steam coming from under the bonnet.
Popped the bonnet open and saw the expansion tank steaming and spraying fluid.
Allowed to settle whilst filling up with fuel and took another look.
All seemed fine so checked that I had not refitted the cap incorrectly earlier and that seemed fine and the level appeared to be correct.
Drove home the 7 miles and checked under the bonnet and all seemed ok.
In the evening checked again and all ok so set off on the same journey.Parked and waited for my daughter and decided to check again and its all fine, switched off engine and within less than a minute the same thing happened, steam , fluid burbling etc.
Considering the fluid loss, the level didn't seem to have dropped, so drove home the 7 miles and checked under the bonnet, all ok, switched off , still ok
At no time did the temp gauge show over normal running temp.
Whats going on here,I am wondering about the function of the coolant tank lid being poor, why is it only pressurising after switch off.

OK, just done the same trip but only switched off at the end of the journey,ie, 14 miles run, no problem, no leak etc, is it possible that I accidentally over filled the level yesterday and it has just blown out the excess, wierd

Eventually got to looking properly and found the tank is stained pink at correct level, so getting a false indication of fluid present, also found that gubbins of the cap has collapsed and allowed the o ring to deform, thus not seating/sealing correctly.
Ordered new tank and cap, cheap aswell at £21 from Europarts, fitting in the morning if the weather suits
