    Hey guys,

I have a MKV Jetta and recently I've noticed that when somewhat hard turning at low speeds (like turning left out of a junction etc.), there is a groaning noise.
The noise is essentially identical to the one found in this video: Groaning noise coming from front of car Audi A3 Sportback 2009 2.0 TDI - YouTube(that isn't my video, it's just one I found after a long time of searching.)

The reason I'm a bit confused with this one is the fact that when the clutch is pushed in, the noise completely disappears.

The video above was found in a forum wherein the OP said that it was caused by water contamination in the gearbox oil and was rectified by flushing and filling the oil a few times. Could this be the likely culprit? It seems a bit strange that the gearbox would be causing this, given that it only happens when turning hard. I'd be afraid to flush the gearbox oil, however, as I have heard of problems arising when changing it.

    Thanks for any help!

This is a known fault and the VW notice for it states to change the gearbox oil, the 02M box uses a special oil that is not readily available on the aftermarket, a 70w-75 weight VAG part number G 052 171 A2 for a 1 litre bottle. It only appears to be available from Febi or Meyle from what I can se but Febi list it as a 75W GL4 and Meyle as a 75W-80 Synt so I would use genuine VAG.

So it's a known fault which is likely to be causing this issue?

And would springing the extra cash for the genuine VAG bottles (I'd assume I need 3 of them) be worth it?

    Darkside Developments - Genuine Transmission Oil for 6 Speed Manual 02M / 02Q - G 052 171 A2
febi bilstein 21829 Gear Oil SAE 75W (GL-4), pack of one: Amazon.co.uk: Car & Motorbike

I'd assume the one from DarkSideDevelopments is the correct genuine VAG oil, and the other is the correct one from Febi?

I'm happy enough springing the extra cash in order to get the genuine VAG oil if it's worth it.

One thing of note that made me think it wasn't the gearbox oil is that I never have any problems shifting, and the shifts are generally quite smooth. Would this make any difference?

Thanks very much for the help so far! Hopefully that's one headache sorted.

Also, this is on a 2.0TDI if that makes any difference in what oil I need.

Why would you pay £30 from Dark Side when you can buy it for £24.89 retail inc VAT from a VAG dealer high street parts counter? As I said and as a Febi main retailer, I am not sure of their cross reference.

Got the gearbox oil changed today and lo and behold the noise is gone! I mean, even if it didn't help, I don't think the gearbox oil was changed by the previous owner, so it was dark brown/kind of black and needed changing anyway.

For anyone experiencing this kind of obscure issue, definitely try changing the gearbox oil.

Thanks a lot for the help!
