Exactly. I'm not expecting everything to be perfect of course but surely the least I can expect is a proper safety check. Apparently it passed MOT with those drop links. How it did I will never know. I can't find a bracket to fix the air box properly either because apparently it has to be ordered as a whole unit. Another expense I could do without. I'm still not sure what to do about the missing EGR valve either. It's clear some boy racer owned it before and couldn't give a toss about safety. Still, the dealer should never have sold it in this state.

Is it definitely missing the EGR 'piston'? Not wound back and stuck open inside?

I suppose it could be. It's just strange the guy from the dealer mentioned yesterday about an EGR delete whenever I said I was going to replace it. If you look close you and see there's 2 empty bolt holes other than the EGR exhaust. I would have thought the EGR valve should be screwed into them?

The EGR valve IS the unit that the pipe connects to and should have a motor at the opposite side to the EGR pipe which winds a disc in and out on a spindle opening and closing the hole where the pipe is connected. There is no bolting of actual valve parts at the pipe end except for the pipe itself and confusingly the flange has 4 holes presumably to enable 2 different types of angled pipes to be fitted.

Ah I see. Maybe I'm wrong then. It just seemed as if it was missing from those empty bolt holes and also because the dealer mentioned it. I'll get my regular mechanic to have a look hopefully this week and see how I go. I've managed to change all the filters myself, so going to take it to him to get a proper oil change and hopefully it'll be ok. If I could just get this fume issue sorted I'll be happy.

Look up VW SSP 316 PDF on T'Internet which will give you a lot of information as to how all the engine systems work.
