    Hi

Just had a phone call from dealer saying that the car is due its cambelt and oil pump change as its 5 years old now for 740 quid. He said its either 140k miles or 5 years whichever comes first. I don't really believe in the whichever comes first concept and stick with the miles which seems to have worked well so far for me so declined it as the car has only done 77k miles so far. Checked on the audi website and cambelt change is not linked to age, its due at 140k miles (info from the additional work section of the vehicle on MyAudi). Sharing it here FYI.

He tried to get me to book ac service which should be done every 2 years (apparently!) declined that as ac dealt with the cooling well over this summer. After that he wanted to book the car in for a general health check up which i declined as well because car just came back from audi after the major service last month and i expect the general health would have been checked up then.

Have you also declined the brake fluid change? Each to their own I guess...

Belts deteriorate with age, every five years is recommended however if you feel like rolling the dice and (potentially) trashing the engine for the sake of a few hundred quid, go ahead, be my guest.

Regarding the Air Con, no need to service every two years unless there is an issue of it not working as normal. Its the usual up-sell routine.

I'm surprised everyone's up for changing the cambelt after 5 years when Audi's own servicing schedule says it's too be changed at 140k miles and makes no mention of the age related change. Surely an important part like that deteriorates more with use rather than just with age regardless of the use. If it was, Audi would be the first one to recommend the change after 5 years, right?

Bearing in water pumps are know failures as the seals do fail over time, and once the water gets in it won't take long for it to fail. Belt tensions also don't last forever. You also have to consider on how many miles you do in a year, I'm doing about 7K miles a year so reach the 140K miles the belt would be 20 years old. I'm getting mine done in another 2 years(5 years), as I want the pump & tensioner replacing. It works out about £12.50 a month over 5 years, I spend that much a week on coffee.

There is another thread about belts in the A3 section on another Audi forum, and Audi have changed the rules for belt changes on the A3. It was based on miles and it's now changed to 140K miles or 5 years. Also pound to a pinch Audi won't be replacing engines when they start failing due to sized water pumps, failed tensioners and snapped belt, it will be the poor owners looking around for replacement engines. I'm not going to be one of them people.

Thanks for sharing this, handy to know they've changed the recommendation for A3.
