My 2012 Passat 2.0 TDI Bluemotion has a fault with the gearbox and I’ve been advised by my local garage that it needs to be replaced. A bearing has come loose and damaged the casing leaving a hole in it.

I was advised by the garage to try and source a second hand or refurbished box as a new one will be around £4000

From reading up on this it appears it’s a fairly common fault with the gearbox on my model. A lot of the refurbished boxes I have found want a box in part exchange. I am concerned that mine will not be useable for this due to the damaged casing. I am also concerned about fitting a second hand box as I don’t want to find myself in this position a second time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions for where to source a gearbox would be great.

    Thanks
    Stu

Could you not have it stripped and the case welded. There are companies that do this. Depending on the hole size they may be able to use a threaded plug and loctite.

Thanks Umel, I’ve spoke to a local gearbox specialist today who have seen this happen a lot. They offered to repair the box if possible or failing that will quote me for a full refurb. It seems to be the most cost efficient way over a new box or taking a risk on a second hand one.
