    Mk4 1.8t ARZ

The car has felt underpowered for a while but the other day it pretty much gave up. I was on a dual carriageway when I lost 80% of acceleration and it started juddering. Felt like multiple misfires.

I parked up and called breakdown. They put their machine on it (It was in Spanish so I couldn't read it) and the guy said it was a spark problem. I managed to limp it to my parents place a few miles away just about.

Used vcds lite to check for codes and all that was showing was maf sensor signal too low and radio short to gnd intermittent.

Hoping it was an easy fix I bought a new maf. The code went away but it still runs very rough. Before this I also replaced the plugs which made no difference.

Now I have no codes but the problem persists. It's done 133k and has had head gasket done along with other things.

What problems cause no codes? Shot piston rings? I thought it could be the turbo but there's no smoke coming out. There is a strong smell of petrol when I run it now which could be a big clue. I changed the fuel filter 3 years ago.

Any help/suggestions appreciated but I fear it may be time to move on from mk4s

Hi try the ignition module mounted on the side of the air box. A faulty has a random misfire I have had to replace 2 on my 2001 AGU 1.8T.
reasonably cheap and easy to replace
