At the beginning of the week I had the coolant warning light come on my Audi A3 2.0 FSI (2004), the bottle was pretty much empty so I topped it back up and when I drove to work the next day the light came on again.

Topped it up again and the coolant light flashed on after driving for about a minute. Pulled into a carpark and popped the bonnet. The remaining coolant in the reservoir was bubbling and some was spluttering from the return pipe.

I thought the return pipe was at fault so I taped it up and refilled the coolant. Got to work fine but on the way home last night the light came on. I stopped at a Tesco and was only about 2 miles from home so thought it would be fine to drive. I came off a roundabout onto a high speed road and when I put it in 4th the car started to judder badly and the engine light flashed up so I dropped it to 3rd and the juddering was lighter. Got to another roundabout so dropped to 2nd and it struggled going up a small incline. I left it in 2nd and went easy on the throttle to get it home. Luckily I only had to coast the rest of the way.

I've topped the coolant up and left the car at home, I thought it was worth seeing if it leaks without pressure.

Just wondered if the juddering could be caused by the car overheating without coolant? or could it be 2 different issues? I thought maybe the coil packs need replacing?

Any advice or thoughts would be much appreciated.

You could have very likely cooked your engine. No water in reservoir for a reason, and having to top it up so often is a clue. Needs looking into before you decide to continue driving it.

Thought it was worth adding an update for anyone with a similar issue. I fixed the problem by putting in a new reservoir bottle and changing the ignition coils. Running smooth again.
