Hi newbie here so I hope I’m complying correctly, apologies if not.

I have a VW Polo 1.4 TDi (2008) & I want to replace the chain & sprockets which drive the balance shafts & oil pump, as I have recorded 125 000 miles & want to prevent any serious failure.

I want to use genuine VW parts for this task, but I have discovered that I cannot purchase the sprocket which is attached to the crankshaft from VW? The sprocket is shown in schematic but there is no part number? Apparently the sprocket is only available when you purchase a new crankshaft!

How am I supposed to service this chain & sprocket arrangement, if I cannot purchase one vital sprocket?

Fitting a new chain to an existing sprocket is extremely bad practice, is this what VW do if you have the chain replaced by them?

    Mike

Hi thanks for providing this, but I’m uncertain about 3rd party pattern parts, for such a critical component!

I would really like to understand why VW don’t sell this sprocket?

Is it really a circumstance where VW themselves will not replace the sprocket if you take your vehicle to VW & ask for the chain & sprockets to be replaced due to wear, surely ALL of the sprockets are intended to be serviceable items?

It will be superior as they are the #1 remanufacturer / supplier of the VAG balancer shaft issues , even main dealers have been known to buy them !

    How can this circumstance be?

Surely VW have to make the sprocket for the crankshaft?

If they supply one with a new crankshaft (£800) then they should be able to supply just the sprocket!

Also how can a third party part, be superior to a VW component, when the vehicle is a VW?

I think this circumstance is something VW have a responsibility to address!

The sprocket should be made available from VW!!!!

I appreciate your comments regarding this issue, but I feel that VW should provide this component!

    Thanks

OEM doesn't always have the best quality .

These built in design faults ( planned obsolescence ) are made to make us buy a newer vehicle again .

It's the only explanation that could be regarding the 2.0 tdi oil pump drive engineering faults debacle coupled with an inadequate low oil pressure warning system .

The reason VW don’t sell the sprocket is because getting the old one off and the new one on is very difficult, worse than doing the balancer shaft drive gear on a BKP!

Thanks for the further information, I am certainly becoming aware of things that I was totally unaware of.

I’m an engineer by trade, I understand that the crankshaft sprocket would be a shrink fit onto the shaft, I don’t see why this should prevent VW from selling the sprocket, garage workshops which are any good would understand about using heat, to remove & fit components like this?

What is the low oil pressure issue?

    Also what is a BKP?

BKP is a 2.0 tdi greatly affected as is BLB etc .

Glad you're an engineer as you will find the following absolutely nuts .
