I have a VAG 1552 tester, and the plug for it, image below, fits perfectly into the car's OBD socket, which is located next to the rear ashtray.

Recently I needed a spare key, but the lock specialist's plugs, he tried about 3, which were on his professional test gear, would not fit into the socket.

Eventually he realised that it is an early car, where the key is not coded through the ECU, and he only needed to cut the key and copy the original chip with another machine.

He did not seem to have rip-off Chinese gear; he specialises in vehicle lock problems over a huge area in southern France, and his plugs looked identical to the Ross-Tech plugs illustrated on their website.

A friend in England has a genuine Ross-Tech plug, and tells me that the raised "key" on the shorter side of the plug is 10 mm wide and about 2 mm high. My plug has a spring, 6 mm wide, which holds it in the socket.

My socket, picture below, does not have a matching recess to fit this "key", the centre recess is only about 7 mm wide.

Is there some reason for this, or should I just enlarge the centre recess in case it is ever necessary to plug in test gear, e.g. by a VAG dealer?

EDIT: I jut found an image of the standard position for my car. It looks identical to mine. See third image.

Has anyone had a problem connecting to your OBD socket?

I contacted a company specialising in car diagnostic tools about the problem of plugs not fitting my 1996 A4 OBD socket, and got the following reply " ........ in the late 90s Audi got ticked off by the regulators for not allowing enough room around their diagnostic sockets for a lot of tools to fit ............ "

Seems as if VAG were trying to make people think, even that far back, that only their own dealers could service their cars ...........................

Yes those can be trouble to get non genuine plugs into, they probably took the specs to the extreme knowing it would trip aftermarket companies up and the immobiliser on the 8D is coded through the OBDII plug, your chap has cloned the original key so your cars immobiliser will see both keys as being the same.
