Hey guys, I have a 2008 2.8 FSI (auto). The car recently had a starting issue, took it to an Audi specialist who traced it to be a wire behind the dashboard that was causing a short circuit. Came to pick the car up, started the first time. Drove 9 miles, parked for like 5min, tried to start and it wouldn't crank (pump primes and LPFP clicks but doesn't crank). Waited 15 min, tried to start again and the car fired up. Drove another 9 miles back to the garage, stopped and tried to start the car, I couldn't replicate the issue as it started the first time no matter how long we waited - so took it back home for now as had to drive it the next day.

Today I decided to drive the car. Started the first time, no issues, no lights, no judder - smooth as ever. Drove 2 miles to warm it up, came back home and stopped, tried to start and nothing! It wouldn't crank at all. Had to wait 20min and the it started without any issues. Drove the car again for like 5 miles, parked and turned the car off. Started again first time no issues. Tried stop and starting like 10 times and again I couldn't replicate the issue as it starts the first time.

When I took the car back to the garage, they connected their VCDS but found 0 codes.

So the issue is when I start the car the first time and switch it off it will not start again no matter what and I simply have to wait 10min, it then starts straight away after that for the whole day any time of the day, cold engine or warm.

Any gurus out here that had a similar issue?

When it won’t start, is the starter motor turning or is nothing happening?

Nope, I can't hear anything when trying to start it. No clicks, no noises from the front of the car. The only thing I can hear is LPFP clicking at the back and that's it. If it was a sticky starter motor then why would it start as normal after a short 10-20min break and continue to work non stop until overnight?

I've researched a lot and the suggestion given to other members with similar issues on other Audi forums is that it is one of the temp sensors: when cold it starts without any issues but when the car is warm, the (temp) sensor thinks it is still cold and throws too much fuel thus flooding the engine.

Another suggestion is an ECM relay. I'm going to plug the car to a VCDS in a few days time to see if it stored any codes since the garage erased it all.

It cannot be a temp sender if it is not turning over, a faulty battery or heat related starter motor issue makes most sense.

I've decided to take the car back to the Audi specialist who "partially" fixed my car and left me with a fault. Let's see what they say. I'll post the results here.

Hey Crasher, today I started the car from the first time but it began to judder vigorously for under 10 seconds, it then calmed and was normal again. After driving for like 10 minutes I stopped and tried to start it and it did start without any issues.

I connected the car to VCDS and here's what it gave me:

    Starter control, feedback terminal 50
    Short circuit to ground/interruption
    Code: P3053

Starter relay electrical fault in the circuit
    Code: P3088

I've checked 9n various forums and people suggest it is either the starter relay or the starter itself (as you mentioned). What do you think? Thanks bud.

It was juddering after the starter had disengaged?

Yes, the car started but then immediately began to judder for approximately 8 seconds - the rev counter kept going up and down a bit, hunting the revs.

I think the fault code is more indicative of a general voltage supply issue. The 4F gives a data stamp with many of its codes, do a FULL global scan of the car and post the result inside the # code function

Just an update, took it to a local audi specialist and feel like I'm being milked - so your opinion would be appreciated.

They initially, fixed an error by replacing some cable behind the dashboard (provided me with a non-itemised receipt). The car developed the same fault so I took it back to them, they now say that they've replaced the starter motor and the starter motor relay (I don't even think it was necessary), and a few days ago they said they'd need to get an electrician booked as the fault persists. The electrician has diagnosed that the ECU may be faulty - what the actual F?! How, if it hasn't had any water damage (initially the same specialists checked all ECU boxes for any water damage and found it all to be in good order). I feel like a massive complaint is going to go their way tomorrow.

When the car was brought to them I explicitly asked the to check all relays and ECU, their response was that it isn't an ECU or any relays that is at fault.

Apparently they've had to book the same electrician in again for tomorrow to tell them if the fault is repairable or not.

Tell me I'm not being milked...
