    Hi all,

I just bought a A6 (avant) 2.0TDI ultra s line automatic. It's gone 100k (2015) and all seemed well when I test drove it some 2 weeks ago.

I have however noticed a slight squeek when the car is stationary and I put it in gear (D or R)

If I release and put it in N the squeeky noise goes away, but as soon as I put it in gear again its back. Releasing the brake makes the car go slowly as normal and the noise dissappears. Is this something to be worried about?

Have you tried to investigate the area of the noise? Reason I ask is could it be an associated V belt/ pulley squeak?

Thanks for replying Alan, no, I haven't really looked into to it... I suppose when its time to change the timing belt then I'll do a drive belt service as well and change the tension pulley etc... but I would guess that if the noise is related to the drive belt then the noise would be noticable when in P or N as well? Or perhaps it could still be the drive belt as the revs are slightly different?

Yes, i`m thinking about an increase in load on the engine. Its easy enough to check. Not saying its the problem but it will take 5 minuted to eliminate.

Thanks for this Alan, yes, indeed it does seem to be load related, as when the aircon is active, then the noise is almost gone, I can still hear it but barely, when the aircon is off then the noise is more noticable, again, only in 'D' and 'R' when stopped, as soon as the car goes the slight squeek goes too... it does seem to come from the side of the engine... like close to the DPF... not from the front where the drive belt and pulleys are smothly running... perhaps some vibrations are rubbing something

I had a similar dilemma when I had a VW CC . It was manual but the squeak was coming out from the engine bay. It was the AC motor clutch. The cogs were wearing off. I only realised that when the air con died and I had to fix the clutch.

Thanks for the replies... I guess when its time to change the timing belt kit/waterpump then some of the pulleys in the drive belt would benefit from being changed too...

I am assuming that the aircon pulley is one of those ?

Don’t think you would normally change the AC pulley. Do you get that sound with AC off?

Well, actually, when the AC is on, then the squicky noise is almost impossible to hear... its only when the AC is off and the car is in "D" or "R" and you are stopped (brake applied) that you can hear it.
