My mk6 golf 2.0tdi CR140 (engine code CBAB) has come back from its MOT with an advisory stating that the EGR valve is blowing. It can actually be heard when accelerating so I assume I’m losing power and in turn mpg.

    I have two options:

Fit a new EGR valve, or fit an EGR blanking kit and remap.

My question is, when fitting the EGR blanking kit, will the entire EGR valve be removed (thus in theory the ‘blowing’ issue will be resolved)?

Sorry if this is an obvious answer but I can’t find anything online regarding an EGR valve blowing, only failure and then replace/delete.

The legal answer is to fit a new EGR valve but is yours early (on the inlet manifold) or late, behind the engine?

Thanks for the response Crasher. It’s an 09 plate CBAB engine so I am hoping (praying) that this means that the EGR valve is at the front on the inlet manifold?

Unfortunately can’t PM yet as I’m a newbie. But it’s early 2009 and I’ve located the EGR valve this morning so going to whip it off today and clean/inspect to see what’s going on. I’m aware of the law etc that blanking is not ‘recommended’, but if I were to fit blanking plates would this affect the dpf at all?

Blanking off the EGR will bring up the dash EML light which itself will be an MOT fail.

You could get it mapped out at great cost, or fit a replacement EGR.

A few used ones on eBay for around £40.

I’m aware of the MOT implications of doing so and would have it mapped out to remove the EML. I am tempted by fitting a new EGR valve although this is likely/certain to happen again at some point isn’t it?

We've had 2 Passats with this engine ( CBAB ), one had 189k & the other 125k & neither ever had any EGR problems. ( Although we side-stepped the emissions update )

It's the later engines with water cooled EGR that seem to have most of the problems.

But you need to check where the leak is from.

There are a few connections with gaskets to the EGR, may just be a leak at one joint.

But of course most are at the back of the engine & quite difficult to get at.

The early ones have the EGR valve on the front of the inlet manifold BUT be wary as one we did a few weeks back ended up needing a new EGR valve, manifold flap and complete inlet manifold unit and that really added up.
