    Hi all,

I've just bought a 2013 Golf 2.0 150 GT Ecomotive Technology as a second car. Looking at sorting a few issues out I've noticed the rear tyres worn on the inside edges. Also, the suspension feels softer and less responsive than the 2014 Leon we also have, a TD SE which has identical sized 17'' wheels on as the golf.

is the Golf just a softer car? I thought with it being a GT it might have more sporty suspension, apparently not. The car has 110K miles on it. Are the dampers likely to be shot? How can I tell? I've had my wife drive the car while I shadow it and I've not seen any errant behavior from the wheels.

Would bilstein B4 dampers work with the stock springs and would they improve handling over the stock dampers? They are pretty cheap.

Anything else I should be looking at? Never bought a car with over 100k on it before!

    Thank you :0)

110k the originals won't work as well .

B4 is an excellent choice as slightly uprated.

If they are listed for your application, the Koni Active (née FSD) is the best money can buy are are specifically targeted to the original springs. We have done this on many Golf 5, 6 and 7 and they transform the ride and handling.

    An update.

I've had a garage look at the car and they say the dampers are working fine. Certainly, they don't feel 'soft' but the biggest problem they have is that we also own a 2014 Leon!

The Leon is an SE estate, so not even an FR, but the ride and handling balance is better than the Golf. The Golf is firmer so you feel bumps and lumps more but, unusually, this stiffness does not translate into great composure at speed. Over say 40mph the car still pitches and reacts to every bump yet cornering precision and grip are only slightly better than the Leon, if at all considering it's a lighter car. Two-door and not an estate. I just think Seat have done a better job at sorting the suspension on this chassis. Both cars are on the same size of wheels and tyres.

Also, not necessarily a bad thing, but this is the first front wheel drive car I've driven that wants to overseer on the limit. I've messed about with tyre pressures but the balance remains.

I'd certainly like to change the dampers. I don't know if I can justify it on a car that doesn't get used much but the stock set up is not impressive. Another complication is that I don't know exactly what the stock set up is. Googled the car and it looks like it's 15mm lower than the plain vanilla Golf but I don't know how that relates to anything else. Is it similar to the GT or as soft as the regular car? I have no idea. So would the B4 be ok or would i need dampers for shorter springs? Don't know. Don't even know if the B4 might be softer than what I have. Confused.
