This is very odd, I've done all sorts of things with this, I have paired an iPhone 6s without issue and two different Androids, one with single SIM and one with dual SIM. The single SIM one was good as that provided the rSAP Bluetooth profile, which means if you connect the phone and activate "car phone" mode in the Bluetooth settings, you can use your phone as an Internet gateway for the car's Wifi hotspot, this was great for the kids as means when they get in with their tablets they autoconnect and get online, and I have the power to switch to "hands free mode" which effectively disables the data sharing and knocks them off the internet if they are being naughty! And I could do all this without farting about with the phone's hotspot.

Anyway, after I upgraded to a dual SIM Samsung (A50) this rSAP feature is no longer available, so I reverted to starting the hotspot on the phone. I then experimented with a separate data only SIM but couldn't really find one that gave me a decent amount of data for not very much, I'd liked using my phone because work pays for it and there's always spare data on the plan for the kids to use. Anyway I just got a bog standard PAYG 99p EE SIM from a garage and stuck it in and it worked straight away, you only get 50MB initially to get you set up, then you are supposed to top it up.

But the key thing is it "just worked".... so I have no idea what is going on with yours, I'm not sure I caught which operator you are using, have you tried EE or are you using one of the MVNO SIMs like GiffGaff or Virgin?

The one the master tech used and gave me was an EE one. I’ve tried 3, Vodafone and BT. As you say you should just push it in and go so something’s clearly physically broken

Yup , could well be hardware. Just get that 0976 software update applied as a last resort and if that doesnt help then yes, my money is on the hardware too.

Quick update folks as I've been away on hols for 10 days. So! The end of July the car went back in again for the day. They basically compared the inside of the MMI/SIM module with another similar year car and showed that the SIM reader was still not correct. Apparently one of the pins is still broken. Hence the SIM never reads. They took photos and basically have gone back to the Audi approved specialist to say "what exactly did you fix and how was it tested" as it looks like it worked once or twice before the pin broke again.

The dealer is still very apologetic and embarrassed and have assured me that either way it will be fixed. I didn't want a loaner car with a grands excess sitting at the airport so the car is back with them for another week next week. It's a simple case of sending the module off again, and if it still can't be resolved they will fit a new unit. They have been very open about the cost of a new module and they appreciate my understanding while they fix it. I reminded them that they've had the car for 12 of the 60 days i've owned it.

Anyway, fingers crossed (again) it gets sorted.

Dropped the car off this morning for hopefully the last time. Interestingly they said they would also do two recalls. One for the MMI update and second for some fuel emissions. Odd neither was mentioned prior but at least it will hopefully mean they will be updating the MMI to something more stable. Will let you know what happens next week.

Good luck @AlphaPapaGolf. Yeah, there is a new MMI update out across the whole range under a Campaign. It fixes some bugs in the FM Radio as well as squashing some other bugs

The emissions one has been out for quite a while - they should have mentioned that to you last time.

    Keep us posted.

So after another ten days it’s all fixed!!!

The specialist company physically replaced the sim module this time as opposed to “fixing” it. Back to the dealer for a days testing and it’s all working as it should be. I’m a very happy man.

MMI upgrade and the emissions also done apparently. I’m still showing as on software version 358 or something so I don’t know what the mmi update was. Either way I’m happy as it’s all working perfectly.

We we got there I’m the end. Thanks for your help and support folks.
