    Hi guys
Need a little help here please.
I have just replaced clutch, pressure plate and release bearing on my 180k A3.
Not too bad a job but I now cannot select any of those gears forward of neutral ie., reverse, 1st, 3rd, 5th gears.
The gear box is fine and all gears can be selected easily from under the bonnet (ie., checked with cable linkage disconnected).
The problem seems to be either the gear lever (in the car) or the actual cables.
Just as a check I have reset the cables but to no avail the gear lever still cannot be moved forward sufficiently to select those gears.
The cables appear to move freely but by measurement I can see there is insufficient movement (extension) on gear selection cable ( needs circa 50mm movement and only getting circa 35mm movement.
Something is preventing sufficient forward motion of the gear lever.
I have the gear lever in the car exposed and cannot see any obvious obstruction.
The gear lever and gear selection was basically fine before I replaced the clutch.
any ideas before I start aimlessly dismantling gear lever and cables?
FYI gear box is O2J 5 speed.

    thanks guys

With the cable adjusters twisted, pulled back and locked in the open position, did you pin the gear lever in its setting position with a 5mm dowl (a drill bit is fine) and lock the selector unit in the setting position with the built in locking pin on the side of the housing, then release and lock the adjusters?

    Thanks Crasher
Indeed, both ends were locked in setting position as described before resetting cables.
It’s as though something has jammed the forward motion of the gear lever in the car ( nb., with the selector cables released /not connected to anything under the bonnet).
With the base of the gear lever exposed you can see that the lever will not move forward (ie for reverse, 1st, 3rd and 5th motion).
Very strange - I suspect I will need to get under the car and drop out the gear lever and cables to inspect better.

Problems with PQ34 platform cables, floor selector boxes and 02J selector units are extremely rare, I hardly ever get any issues with them. I did have a type 3A Passat in many gears ago with an internally disintegrating cable and I have had a few T5 with cable problems but in essence, it is a very reliable system.

    Thanks for help.
I now know what the problem is having dropped the whole linkage out.
In our quest to drop the gearbox out earlier we obviously damaged the cable end that does gear selection (as opposed neutral side to side movement cable).
Despite tying up the cables and bracket out of the way, somewhere along the line we managed to slightly bend the tube that the cable (rod at this point) runs through ie within the rubber bellows section (hence not seen).
Classic unable to straighten tube without further deformation so new cable now required.
Anyone got one (?) or advice as to where I might purchase at a reasonable price please?
    Part no. Is KU0 1J0 711 265 K

    many thanks
    Simon

KUO is just the external manufacturers reference, Kukko I think. The part number is simply 1K0 711 265 K and is £100.84 genuine, a few companies list it aftermarket but none that I know of in the UK.
