Hi, I have an issue with a 2011 vw passat, I have read the codes and I am getting both left and right rear speed sensor errors, I know these are quite simple to replace and quite cheap but what concerns me is tgat both left and right have shown faults at the same time, could there be something else that is causing this issue before i buy the parts?

I have also removed both wheel bearings and the magnetic rings look intact and good.

That is odd, what is the code error definition, electrical or mechanical fault?

All I got was the 2 codes which were,
0287 rear right wheel speed sensor, no communication- intermittent
    and
0290 rear left wheel speed sensor, no communication- intermittent.
we then reset the fault codes because it seemed strange that both would go at the same time and then the car would not go past 5 miles per hour and the traction control light kept flashing like I was wheel spinning so I turned it off manually and the car drove fine but we got a second code which was,
01316 ABS control unit, check fault codes, intermittent.
after driving a few miles all the lights came back on and only the 2 codes came back which are rear left and right wheel speed sensors, very confusing

That makes me mistrust the reader, for generic hand held readers to give the wrong or slightly misleading code is nothing unusual. Do you have a VAG specialist you can talk to?

sorry for the late reply, Im not sure if they are specialists but the local garage want £50.00 just to plug in and read the codes which I thought was a little steep, I could be wrong though as I've never really needed to see one before.

£55 is a little strong, we charge £36 including a full A4 print out of all systems and then a code clear, mind you the main dealer wants £100 ish so....

Hi, I finally managed to get someone to diagnose the issue for me, I now have printout of all the faults.
I have also replace the suspected speed sensor with a known working one from the same model of car and the error codes are still there even after changeingthe sensor, the live reading is showing o mph on both rear sensors so im now at a bit of a loss, have you ever come across this before?
