So I'm looking to buy a golf. My criteria is that it's cheap to run mostly in town driving, cheap to insure as my son will start driving next year, but still have enough grunt that I enjoy driving it. Was looking at a 2011 VW Golf twist but I'm worried that might be under powered with only 80bhp. Been reading I should avoid the Tsi engines with the chain and tensioner issues so not sure what to do? Budget is around 5k.

    Any advice guys?

I'll start with the (hopefully) obvious one - avoid a diesel

You may well find that while your son has his "L" plates the insurance isn't too bad. It's once he passes it rockets.

Hunt down the car with a shed load of invoices & receipts and, ideally, a knowledgeable owner who can tell you everything about it. In my experience that's more "valuable" than, say, an apparently low mileage. Something a little older but better "cared for" may be a better way to go?

Apologies if that's teaching granny to such eggs.

    Good Luck.

    Andy.
