Do you have full VCDS? Check that point 86 of the relay has ignition live power as you have checked for terminal 30 power. If it does, go the the back of the ECU plug and find the red/blue wire in plug 4 to pin 38 and check the continuity from the ECU side of the plug (probe VERY gently to avoid pin damage) and check there is perfect continuity from there to pin 85 on the relay plate, if not, check the black 10 pin block the wire passes though for corrosion. If you have VCDS, use it to activate the relay in output tests. Is all this fails then yes, you MAY, have a failed ECU but a new/used one is not plug and play and VCDS may not help, some it does, some it doesn’t.

Hi, you're not going to believe this. Refitted the glow plug relay this morning, disconnected the temp sender, turned on ignition and got power to glow plugs. Refitted temp sender connector, turned on ignition and still had power to glow plugs, timed at 7 seconds but still no warning light. Yes I have full VCDS. I now have marks on my head from my finger nails.

Try not to obsess with the “why” as you will be pulling chunks of hair out, I have just given up asking why electronics do this and just accept it no longer is, there is a LONG story about Golf 5 CAN BUS I could bore you with! Warm it up, clear the codes, leave it over night and try it again.

Hi Crasher, do you know If the glow plug warning light feed comes from the ecu and if so does anyone have a diagram of all the pin numbers. I can then check for a broken wire to the dash panel. By the way, if you are sick of me please tell me to go away.

The diagram, which is from Audi's own workshop system, is so poor I cannot see how the glow plug relay is triggered and if this is fed back to the warning light as in the older systems where it used to be on the output side of the fuse so you knew if there was a problem, but these are dual fused single relay powered. Looking at page 11 of the wiring diagram I sent, if you look at the schematic of the dash lights you can see the K29 warning light, look straight down and this is on current track 137, look up and you see it comes out as a brown/green (extremely thin 0.35m2 CSA) wire from the dash plug T32 pin 13 to a box saying 72. This means this wire jumps to current track 72 so if you look at page 7 at the bottom you see 72 which represents an invisible vertical column so look up and you see box 137, (from current track 137) go into plug 4 pin 30 of the ECU still as a brown/green passing through a ten pin orange connector at pin 2 so look there for corrosion and at the ECU plug 4.

Hi Crasher, brilliant. I've always been a bit dim with these type of wiring diagrams but when you've explained it the way you have it's looks so easy. Thanks friend
    you're a star.

It isnít you, most people are thrown by them but I think they have a beautifully simplistic logic to them akin to Becks underground diagram.

Hi, checked wiring from dash to ecu, no breaks or corrosion, must be fault in ecu. Glow plugs work fine just no warning light so just going to leave it. The car is 20 years
old in November and it only does about 4,000 miles a year. So once again thanks for all your help. Wiring diagrams don't frighten me at all now.
