    Hi All,

We have a 2008 Tiguan 2.0 TDI, recently the coolant low level warning came on and so it begins......

Opening the bottle the fluid rushed back in. We noticed that the coolant is being pressurised in the bottle and forced out of it. If you take it for a drive you will see a small trail of coolant under the bottle.

Ive done a fair bit of searching around and many threads fail show their final outcome to similar problems...

This evening I fitted a pressure gauge to the coolant bottle and took it for short but hard drive (10mins), the pressure came up to 8PSI in the bottle and settled down to 6PSI when parked running. It is not overheating, sitting steady at 90degrees. Doesn't appear to be oil in water, or water in the oil. No smoke or steam. Again when releasing the pressure the level increased. I also noted after the drive the right hand side radiator hose was hot, but the left was still stone cold.

Any thoughts, next steps/tests or input gratefully received!

Personally I have never known a 2L EA189 engine to suffer a head gasket failure but that is certainly what that description brings to mind. Has something happened to it such as overheating due to another failure?

Not that we are aware of.

It had an EGR cooler sometime ago, due to white smoke at the exhaust.

There is no smoke now, no lack of power and none of the usual indicative features of head gasket failure.... Compression test next? Sniffer test?

From my experience with the 8v PDTDI and its propensity for head gasket failure I found that a sniff test would not work as the bottle kept filling up with water and making the chemical change colour anyway and a compression test will show bugger all. With modern MLS (Metal Layer Shim) gaskets it comes down to crossed fingers and a gut instinct in that if the problem only occurs during high load such as motorway cruising, you can be pretty sure it it the gasket. The MLS gasket also complicates rebuilding as the finish of the head and block are critical, a specific RA (roughness average) has to be achieved as specified by the gasket manufacturer.
