    The controller is in the large fan and there are two versions 220 or 300 watt. The problem is the controller can be damaged by a faulty second fan so you must change both. The main fan is £240 from VW and the second is £205 BUT both are easily available aftermarket for much less.

    Thanks crasher, so not worth just changing the controller then? and how do I know which version I have of the large fan?

    Interestingly I was looking at the handbook for an entirely unrelated reason and I read the page regarding the gauges, apparently the normal operating range is up to 120degC, and the warning light will not come on till that temp is exceeded, so I may have been panicking for nothing! still seems to be a very high temp for the engine to be running at, but what do I know!

    Yes mine says that as well, but 120°C is definitely not normal unless you are towing a caravan up a steep hill in the hottest place on earth!

    In the UK a car should never exceed 90 maybe going up to 100 tops if you're pushing it.
