    I’ll let someone else answer as I don’t know the 4.2 engine (mine is a 3.2). Timing imbalance can be read within blocks 93 of engine ECU module, so you can check this without any guesswork being required once you have vcds or an xtool vag401 reader.

    The BAT and BVJ cam drive systems are scary, four chains and all the things that go with them. They wear badly on LongLife service regimes and if rebuilding preventatively you can throw £6K at a BAT chain drive.

    thank you. i'll have a look on VCDS later. i've not noticed any codes or rattles from the engine, but will check this this ecu module.

    update...
    over the weekend i managed to put some kilometers in.
    also managed to coast and turn off engine whilst at speed which indicated vibration is still there, which leads me to think its
    * driveshaft
    * cv joint
    * disc/rotar
    * caliper
    * diff
    * propshaft
    * bushes.

    also noticed that 2 of the discs are quite warm even when not thrashed, which is leading me to think it could well be caliper or disc.

    i'm more relieved its not engine or gearbox as the vibration is still there when off and in neutral.
    will have another look at each of these components this weekend.

    rewound rear calipers and issues has gone, so assume it must be sticking caliper.
