As the title says, No1 cam lobe is worn, the first lobe behind the timing belt. The car is a 58plate 2lt TDI Pwb engine. The rocker cover gasket was being replaced and the machanic noticed 2 flat points along the long sides of the lobe, one in each side, then on the "top" of the lobe you can feel a grove but it doesn't travel all the way round the lobe.
What could possibly cause this, the machanic is stumped, I can't help because I don't know the history of the car it's been service up to 88k, the car has done 94k. The service history is first service by Audi at 18k, then 29k-71k 3 services by the same non Audi garage, 71k-87k 2 services non Audi garage. Long life service? Timing belt and water pump done at 76k.
The only other really unusual thing of note is, I've had to replace all 3 engine mounts, the front mount just needed the rubber, but the left&right ones were "smashed" on the bottom of the mounts, again I don't know why or how.
Any advice anyone can offer would be greatfully received

BPW engine....yes it is a very common problem on the 8v PDTDI and the next thing you know will be a horrendous hammering noise when the cam eats through the lifter. The cause is the oil used over too long a period.

If you don't fit new rocker arms, this can happen to the new cam which is not covered under any companies warranty unless you have proof the rockers were new.
