Problem. When under 'load' the vehicle develops a distinct 'hiss'.Cuts in at about 2250rpm.Not detectable at this rpm when stationary.Power is unaffected, fuel consumption unaffected,no increase in oil consumption,no warning lights.A hairline crack was discovered in the exhaust gas recirculation pipe. There was a build-up of black soot in this area. This pipe was replaced, however the problem still exists.Visual inspection of pipes/hoses in the top area of the motor does not readily reveal any leaks.(no smell of exhaust gas detected underneath).Would plugging in to diagnostic socket reveal anything? All in all vehicle runs as well as it always has.
    Anyone any thoughts.
    Thanks.

Sounds like a boost leak, split hose or intercooler and to find this a pressure test rig is the best idea or a smoke machine test.

The intercoolers split due to metal fatigue as well as the hoses due to rubber fatigue mainly due to oil damage.

Hi Crusher (or anyone).Have had a v.good look around the top left of the intercooler (as you look from the front). From what I can see, a little oil & 'smudging' appears at the top of the metal pipe which leads from the rubber hose up to the i/c.I cant quite see where this pipe joins in to the i/c but I wonder if there is a split in this area?BUT why oil.I thought this pipe & the i/c only carried air?
Also do you know what the horzontal piping across the front of the i/c is for? A/c maybe?Possibly a cooling pipe??
Vehicle goes for a check tomorrow but I would like to know what I'm talking about! If i/c needs replacing do the h/lights/bumper/bonnet slam panel need to be removed or maybe start from the back-radiator forward??
    Thanks in anticipation.

The boost air carries oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system taken in on the compressor intake and from the compressor piston ring of the turbo shaft and this condenses back into liquid in the charge air system, pooling at the lowest point or edges where it can settle. Under boost this will creep out of even the tiniest weep and a decent leak would throw a lot of oil out all over the surrounding area.
