    Hi,

Does £175 sound right for a CVT/Multi-tronic gearbox oil change on a 2002 A6 2.5TDI CVT? This is from a main dealer.

    Cheers

    Rob

Nope, I don't believe it's just a "here's a bottle of oil job". Anyone had this done (you should have, as it's due every 40K miles!)

£175 is not a bad price, and bearing in mind that if you don't bother you could be looking at a £4000 bill for a new box.

The change is 4 - 5 litres of fully synthetic gold plated oil, that will set you back better part of £50 from a main dealer. Don't even think about putting dextron III or IV in or you can kiss the box goodby.

Then you have to run the box up to temperature while monitoring the level and filling it from underneath plugged into a PC.

Car has to be totally level while you do this.

While I have done the job myself, it was not easy, and is above the average home mechanic.

As for the famous quote that auto boxes are sealed for life, well that is true if you like buying new boxes. Don't bother to change the oil and don't be supprised if it gives up the ghost by 75,000 miles.
Change the oil at least every 40,000 miles and you can get over 200,000 miles (provided you have had the 7 plate clutch kit fitted on the CVT)

In addition to Lonk'y great advice.. if you do try and change the oil yourself, make sure you're wearing clothes that you're prepaired to throw away!

Gearbox oil will leave anything it touches stinking of sulphur!

VW told me that the oil in my gearbox din't need changing, but I went ahead anyway and it immediately sorted the crunchy gear selection problem I was having!

    Alex.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the advice - I'm definately having it done, but I just wanted to check I wasn't paying OTT on the price.

I'm also getting them to do the recall work on the plenum chamber FoC whilst it's in.

Has anyone ever got the 7-plate conversion done Free outside of Audi's warranty?

    Thanks

    Rob

    Hello,

I have an A4 that has just had the clutch plate conversion done (see B6 board for detail).

Car was 3 years and 11 months old and had done 37,00 miles when it was done. It had no Audi warranty on it.

I had purchased it 3 months previously from a non-Audi dealer.

After diagnostics through Audi, it was the Audi guy that said Audi would pay 50% of the bill - I did not even think of requesting this as it hadn't been brought from them.
