Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but I've had a good search but nothing similar has come up.

On my Golf Mk 5 GT TDi 2.0l 170 bhp, I've recently started to get the Glow Plug light coming on but no limp mode, I have a Carista OBD reader but not getting an error code, occasionally the EML comes on but again no error code. There is evidence of a bit of juddering but in general the engine runs smoothly. When I switch off and then restart the light has gone out but soon comes back on often after acceleration. There is about 150K on the clock, I've had it regularly serviced and the DPF has been regenerated.

Any suggestions of possible cause would be appreciated before I take it to my local friendly independent VW garage.

Your code reader only picks up OBDII codes so is missing the problem.

Check Gumtree/Ebay etc for someone in your area who may be able to do a VCDS check for you for a fraction of the price if you want.

Also be aware there is software available on eBay to delete out fault codes permanently from your car. Total nightmare.

Why would anyone want to do that unless they were trying to con someone?

Thats exactly why they do it. Im guessing its a lot easier to sell a car with no engine light than with an engine light. Same with the mot, you wont pass with an engine light. I dont condone it in any shape or form but we have to appreciate thats it out there and available, to help understand why a car may be running poorly and show no faults. The amount of cars Ive had to remove the dash and poke bits of foam out from hiding warning lights lately is worrying. So it shows what some people are like.

Normally decent people can suddenly become demons when it comes to spending money on cars. Over the last four years I have been re-engineering an R32 turbo conversion which initially was a potential bomb and two years ago got it to the point of being as mechanically perfect as the owners pocket can stand. Some aspects have been murderous such as the AEM piggy back ECU being faulty and their technical backup being appalling but in the end I got there with Perfect Powers SMT8. Unfortunately on a test drive in the rain it started to misfire when on boost under hard load and eventually even when dry. I spent six months combing through everything I had done and not done, even gave it to two other specialists who gave up. The misfire became a bang that was so loud it set alarms off and I could find nothing, dual trace scope checks on every circuit, everything, admittedly not on rollers which I failed to get someone to work with me on. In the end I decided to install the factory map which made it run like a dog with the bigger injectors but I used the new Perfect Power SMT8 I had fitted to pull these in so I could run it and straight away the crank speed sensor flagged up implausible when it misfired. It turned out that the original builder had installed a feature to make the exhaust go poppty bang on the overrun to sound cool. The trouble was this caused a cams/crank correlation error that brought on the MIL so they removed the ECUS’s ability to register a G28 error! Eventually I found the plug of the G28 had been back probed and water had got into the plug through the tiny hole and gone down into the sensor. I was spitting feathers when I found it and would have found it earlier if they had not relocated the plug to somewhere you could not get at it.

I feel your pain! Have a look here....

DTC Remover 1.8.5.0 ECU DPF EGR ERROR REMOVE NEW >>FAST DOWNLOAD<< | eBay

3 sold and thats only a 1 minute check on Ebay.

Probably advertising it here isnt smart but the ability to reverse engineer it would resolve the problem.

Very many thanks for your comments and help but thankfully the light has stopped coming on. I think I must have got some dirty diesel from a friend so I filled the tank up with good clean stuff and drove it around on the DPF recharge speed 50mph at 2000 revs for a couple of days and it stopped bringing the light on. Here's hoping that it stays off.
