Do you mean the two piece offside driveshaft mid support bearing fitted to a few Golf 5’s and A3’s?

They are the cv joint flanges, behind these are the differential taper roller bearings and to change these the box has to be completely stripped down and the diff removed. Then you fit two new diff bearing outer races with a spacer first in one side and a shim (say 0.3mm) in the other side, fit new inner races to the diff, re-fit only the diff and bolt the case halves back together. Then you use a dial gauge to measure how much float there is between the races and use this measurement together with a pre load figure and the thickness of the shim to calculate the thickness of the shim you need to install so that the new diff bearings are clamped together correctly. Yes, it is a lot of work, 99.9% of gearbox rebuilders don’t bother and just re-use the original thickness pre load shim and most of the time they get away with it. The advantage of this is too lose is better than too tight...........
